Enterotoxigenic E. coli produces heat-labile and heat-stable toxins that disrupt fluid balance in the intestines. This leads to watery diarrhea without significant tissue invasion or bleeding. It is the most common cause of traveler's diarrhea and is frequently acquired in areas with poor sanitation. Most infections are self-limited, but dehydration can become significant if untreated. Detection reflects toxin-producing potential rather than symptom severity.
Enterotoxigenic E. coli LT/ST is included in these pre-built panels.
