Yersinia enterocolitica is commonly acquired from undercooked pork, contaminated water, or unpasteurized dairy products. Symptoms often include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever, sometimes resembling appendicitis or Crohn's disease. Infection can persist longer than many other bacterial pathogens and may trigger autoimmune conditions such as reactive arthritis or autoimmune thyroid disease in susceptible individuals. Many cases are self-limited, but chronic immune activation can occur. Detection reflects active intestinal colonization.
