About the carotid ultrasound

A carotid ultrasound checks the arteries in your neck for plaque and narrowing. A sonographer moves a small handheld probe over each carotid artery, using sound waves rather than radiation, to image the artery walls and measure blood flow; the exam takes about 30 minutes. A radiologist reports whether plaque is present and how much narrowing, if any, exists in each artery.
