Glandulars FAQs

What are glandular supplements?

Glandulars are concentrated extracts from animal organs (typically grass-fed bovine), used in functional medicine to provide tissue-specific peptides, enzymes, and cofactors. Common types include adrenal, thyroid, liver, kidney, spleen, and thymus.

Do glandulars actually work?

Evidence is mostly traditional and clinical, less RCT-based. The theory is 'like supports like' — adrenal glandulars provide cortex peptides and nutrients for adrenal support, for example. Quality and sourcing matter more than with most supplements.

What should I look for in a glandular?

New Zealand or Argentine grass-fed sourcing, freeze-dried processing, and third-party tested for safety. Avoid products from factory-farmed animals or unspecified sources.

Are thyroid glandulars the same as desiccated thyroid medication?

No. Prescription desiccated thyroid (NP Thyroid, Armour) contains standardized T3 and T4. OTC thyroid glandulars in the US must have hormone removed by law, though some imported products contain active hormone — which is risky and unregulated. Don't self-treat thyroid disease with OTC glandulars.

How are glandulars different from organ meats?

Same idea, different format. Organ meats (liver, heart, kidney) provide the same concentrated nutrients as glandulars but as part of a meal. Glandular supplements are useful when you don't enjoy organ meats or want a targeted, freeze-dried dose without cooking.

How long until glandulars work?

Adrenal and thyroid glandulars often produce subjective changes within 2–4 weeks (energy, stamina). Longer-term tissue support takes 8–12 weeks. Track symptoms and labs (TSH, cortisol) before and after to evaluate honestly.

Can I take glandulars with prescription medications?

Adrenal glandulars can interact with corticosteroids; thyroid-related products can affect thyroid medication dosing. Always inform your prescriber. Most other glandulars (liver, spleen, thymus) have minimal interactions but warrant a check-in if you're on multiple medications.

Are glandulars safe for everyone?

Avoid if you have BSE/prion-related concerns (choose New Zealand sourcing — TSE-free), autoimmune conditions involving the same organ (Hashimoto's with thyroid glandulars, for instance), or pregnancy. Vegetarians/vegans by definition won't want these.
