Vitamin B9 (Folate) FAQs

What's the difference between folate, folic acid, and methylfolate?

Folate is the natural form found in food. Folic acid is the synthetic form in fortified foods and most supplements — it must be converted to active folate. Methylfolate (5-MTHF) is the active form, bypassing conversion steps. People with MTHFR variants benefit most from methylfolate.

Why is methylfolate preferred over folic acid?

Folic acid that isn't fully converted can build up as unmetabolized folic acid in the blood, with unclear long-term effects. Methylfolate goes directly to where folate is needed. For most people, either form works, but methylfolate is the safer, more efficient choice.

How much folate should I take?

RDA is 400 mcg DFE/day for adults, 600 mcg in pregnancy, 500 mcg lactating. Methylfolate doses of 400–1,000 mcg are common in supplements. Don't exceed 1,000 mcg/day from supplements without clinical guidance — high folate can mask B12 deficiency.

Why is folate critical in pregnancy?

Adequate folate before conception and in the first 4 weeks of pregnancy reduces neural tube defects (spina bifida, anencephaly) by 50–70%. Start 400–800 mcg daily at least 1 month before trying to conceive — neural tube closure happens before many people know they're pregnant.

Should I take folate if I have an MTHFR variant?

Yes — methylfolate (5-MTHF) is preferred because it bypasses the MTHFR enzyme step. About 30–40% of people have at least one MTHFR variant that reduces folic acid conversion efficiency. Methylfolate works regardless of variants.

What foods are high in folate?

Leafy greens (spinach, kale, collards), legumes (lentils, chickpeas, black beans), asparagus, avocado, broccoli, brussels sprouts, citrus fruits, and fortified grains. Cooking destroys some folate — eat some greens raw or lightly cooked.

Can too much folate cause problems?

Excess folic acid (synthetic) can build up as unmetabolized folic acid, with possible links to immune effects. Excess folate from food or methylfolate is generally safe. High folate can mask B12 deficiency — don't over-supplement without testing both.

Does folate help with mood or depression?

Methylfolate is approved as an adjunct to antidepressants (as Deplin, prescription-strength). Some people with low folate or MTHFR variants respond to methylfolate alone. Doses for mood typically range from 1,000 to 15,000 mcg under clinical supervision.

When should I take folate?

Anytime, with or without food. Some people prefer morning to avoid any energy effects. If pairing with other B vitamins, take with breakfast or lunch — high doses of methylfolate late in the day can disrupt sleep in sensitive people.
