Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) is a fat-soluble antioxidant supporting cell membranes.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidation. It supports cardiovascular health, skin integrity, and immune function. Eight forms exist (4 tocopherols, 4 tocotrienols); the body preferentially uses alpha-tocopherol but the others have unique benefits.
Mixed tocopherols (especially with gamma-tocopherol) are preferred. High-dose alpha-tocopherol alone displaces gamma-tocopherol and may reduce some of vitamin E's benefits. Look for products that provide all four tocopherols, ideally with tocotrienols too.
RDA is 15 mg (22.5 IU) of alpha-tocopherol equivalents. Up to 400 IU is generally safe. Doses above 400 IU long-term have been linked to bleeding risk and possible mortality concerns in some studies. Avoid high doses with blood thinners.
Natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) is twice as bioavailable as synthetic (dl-alpha-tocopherol). Look for products labeled 'd-alpha' or 'mixed natural tocopherols'. Avoid 'dl-alpha' synthetic forms when possible.
Sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, avocado, spinach, broccoli, wheat germ, and vegetable oils (sunflower, safflower, olive). A handful of almonds covers about half the daily RDA. Most people get adequate vitamin E from a varied diet.
Topically, it has limited evidence — sometimes worsens scarring rather than improving it. Internally, adequate vitamin E supports skin barrier function and antioxidant defense. Mixed tocopherols + tocotrienols are most beneficial.
Yes — they work synergistically. Vitamin C regenerates oxidized vitamin E, extending its antioxidant action. Many antioxidant formulas combine them. Both are best taken with food for absorption.
Vitamin E has mild blood-thinning effects. Avoid high doses with warfarin, aspirin, fish oil, or other anticoagulants without clinician guidance. Stop high-dose E 1–2 weeks before surgery to reduce bleeding risk.
Tocotrienols are a related family of vitamin E forms with unique cardiovascular and brain benefits not seen with tocopherols. Annatto-derived tocotrienols (delta and gamma) have the most research. Some formulas combine tocopherols and tocotrienols for full-spectrum vitamin E.
