Because this is an observational association rather than a controlled trial, some of the effect may reflect shared causes like smoking. A low essential mineral usually calls for a simpler response: review your diet, absorption, and any source of ongoing loss, then retest. A one-time value is a snapshot, so watching your own trend across draws is more meaningful than a single comparison to a population range.
For the essential minerals, retesting sooner than roughly three months mostly captures short-term fluctuation rather than real change, so a three to six month interval after a dietary change is reasonable. A single blood cadmium reflects mainly recent exposure, but the body burden builds up in the kidney over years, so once a source is removed it can be tracked less often.
Several things shift multiple results at once. Recent meals and fasting status change zinc and other values, so a consistent collection routine matters. Inflammation or a recent infection can raise copper and lower zinc on its own, mimicking a toxic pattern. And a single draw captures recent mercury and current mineral status well but does not reveal your lifetime exposure history.
