Everyone gets small amounts of germanium from food and the environment. The results that matter most are the ones that fit a clear exposure story: capsules, drops, tonics, topical products, or workplace contact. Germanium is sold as an immune, cancer, anti-aging, or wellness aid, but those claims have not been proved, and chronic supplement use has caused serious harm.
Hair incorporates some elements while it grows, so it can reflect exposure over the past few months. It can also pick up material from shampoos, dyes, sweat, and dust. So this test is less about how you feel today and more about whether a past exposure is showing up. The stakes are clearest for chronic high-dose supplements: germanium poisoning has caused nerve and kidney damage that did not fully reverse after stopping.
Germanium (Ge) is a metalloid. It behaves partly like a metal and partly like a non-metal. Your body has no known need for it and does not make it. Hair does not produce germanium either. It can capture germanium that reaches the growing follicle, and it can also carry contamination from the outside. That is why a hair result is an exposure clue, not a direct measure of today's blood level or the amount reaching your kidneys.
Older supplement-exposure work found unexposed people's samples below that lab's detection limit, while people taking high-dose germanium had much higher hair and nail levels. Newer population studies can measure low background levels in hair. Detection by itself does not mean poisoning. This is a research-grade marker without agreed cutpoints, so a single value is best read as a flag for exposure, not a diagnosis.
The clearest harm from germanium comes from taking it. In three people who swallowed high-dose germanium preparations daily for about 12 to 16 months, hair germanium reached levels the same lab could not detect in unexposed people. Their nails and toenails rose too.
One documented case involved a woman who took roughly 36 milligrams of inorganic germanium a day for about six years, close to 80 grams in total. Germanium collected in her hair and nails, which is how the poisoning was confirmed. Form matters, but it does not make the supplement market safe. Many severe cases involved inorganic germanium dioxide or products that may have contained it; organic forms sold as safer have not shown proven health benefits.
Chronic high-dose germanium use has caused loss of coordination and position sense, damage to the nerves in the arms and legs, and kidney failure. In the case above, the nerve and kidney injury did not reverse after she stopped, and she later died after pneumonia and sepsis. Autopsy findings showed damage in the nerve clusters near the spinal cord. This is why a rising number here is a warning rather than something to chase upward.
A small study found people with more germanium in their hair were far more likely to have periodontitis. Periodontitis is the deeper gum and bone disease that loosens teeth. This came from a single snapshot of 109 adults in Korea, so it shows a link, not a cause. One hair result should not change dental care by itself.
Among 373 women in Shanxi Province, China, higher hair germanium came with higher odds of flu-like illness, and the odds climbed as the level rose. The same study tied higher hair germanium to eating more meat and fried food, which points to diet as one possible route in. This was one cross-sectional look, so it cannot prove germanium caused the illness.

These are small, one-time snapshots, and the ADHD result was cautionary even in the authors' discussion. Treat the number as a marker of exposure, not proof that germanium caused any of these conditions.
The findings seem to pull in opposite directions. Higher hair germanium has tracked with gum disease and flu-like illness. Lower hair germanium has shown up in boys with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and in children with Kashin-Beck disease. Kashin-Beck disease is a regional bone and joint disorder. None of this makes germanium a nutrient to replace. Hair germanium is better treated as an exposure marker caught inside different diets, soils, and habits. There is no target to hit, and one reading in isolation should not drive any decision.
Hair element testing has reliability problems, especially when a broad commercial panel is used to make a diagnosis from one sample.
One hair reading is noisy. A second, collected the same way after the exposure changes, is more useful because the question is direction. If new hair shows less germanium after a supplement stops, that fits the exposure story. If it rises despite no clear source, think harder about contamination, workplace contact, or a hidden product ingredient.
Hair germanium testing makes most sense when the result can be matched to a source. Supplements are the first place to look, then topical products and workplace materials. Kidney markers and nerve symptoms matter more than the hair number alone because they tell you whether exposure is doing harm.
