Urinary Support FAQs

What's in a urinary support formula?

Cranberry extract (PACs prevent E. coli adhesion), D-mannose (binds E. coli), uva ursi (traditional urinary herb), hibiscus, and probiotics. These work to prevent UTIs and support bladder health, particularly for people with recurrent infections.

Does cranberry actually prevent UTIs?

Standardized cranberry extracts with at least 36 mg of PACs (proanthocyanidins) per dose reduce UTI recurrence in clinical trials. Cranberry juice cocktail and most low-dose products don't have enough PACs to be effective.

When should I see a doctor about a UTI?

If you have burning, frequency, blood in urine, fever, back pain, or symptoms lasting more than 24–48 hours despite supplements. Untreated UTIs can spread to the kidneys. Supplements are for prevention, not active infection treatment.

Cranberry vs. D-mannose — which works better?

Both prevent E. coli adhesion through different mechanisms. D-mannose may work faster in acute prevention; cranberry has more long-term recurrence data. Many people use both together for additive protection. Neither treats an active infection.

How much D-mannose should I take?

For prevention: 1–2 g/day. For acute prophylaxis after a UTI trigger (sex, dehydration): 2 g every 2–3 hours for the first 24 hours, then taper. Drink plenty of water with each dose.

Will urinary support work for non-E. coli UTIs?

D-mannose and cranberry primarily target E. coli, which causes 80–90% of UTIs. They have less effect on other bacteria (Klebsiella, Proteus, Enterococcus). For recurrent UTIs not caused by E. coli, see a clinician for culture-guided treatment.

Can I take urinary support during a UTI?

D-mannose may help adjunctively at the first sign of an E. coli UTI but doesn't replace antibiotics for an established infection. If symptoms persist 24–48 hours, get evaluated. Untreated UTIs can become kidney infections.

Are there safety concerns with cranberry supplements?

Cranberry can interact with warfarin (increased bleeding risk). It's generally safe for healthy adults. People with kidney stones (especially calcium oxalate) should consult a clinician — cranberry is high in oxalate.

Should I take probiotics with urinary support?

Yes — vaginal lactobacillus strains (L. crispatus, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri) help maintain a healthy genitourinary microbiome and reduce UTI recurrence. Many urinary support products include these strains, or you can add them separately.
