About IgE Allergy Explorer

Allergy rarely shows up as one clean trigger. Most people who react to something react to a web of related proteins, and a single skin test or a short food panel catches only a corner of it. This panel reads your allergy antibodies (called IgE, short for immunoglobulin E) against hundreds of individual allergens in one draw, including the exact molecules inside them.

That molecular detail is what separates a genuine food allergy from a harmless cross-reaction with pollen. Think of this as a wide screening map rather than a diagnosis. It is most useful when you read it next to your real symptoms.

What This Panel Reveals

The panel covers four broad territories at once. The airborne group maps what you breathe in: grass, tree, and weed pollens, indoor and outdoor molds, dust mites, and proteins shed by pets and pests. The food group covers nuts, seeds, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables.

A third group looks at stinging and biting sources, including honey bee, wasp, hornet, cockroach, and other insects. A fourth covers natural rubber latex. Testing them together is efficient, since one blood sample answers questions across your whole environment and diet rather than one suspicion at a time.

The Molecular Layer That Sets This Panel Apart

Older allergy tests use whole extracts, a mash of every protein in a food or pollen. This panel also measures IgE against single purified proteins (called components). That distinction matters because different proteins carry very different risk.

Storage proteins in nuts and seeds, such as the peanut protein Ara h 2, are stable through heat and digestion and track with true, sometimes severe, food allergy. Pollen-like proteins (the PR-10 family, such as birch Bet v 1) and plant profilins (such as birch Bet v 2) are fragile, usually causing only an itchy mouth, and often signal cross-reaction with pollen rather than food allergy. Lipid transfer proteins (such as peach Pru p 3) are tough and more often linked to whole-body reactions.

Two more molecular signals recur across the panel. Fish parvalbumin and shellfish tropomyosin explain why one fish or shellfish reaction often predicts others. Sugar tags shared across plants and insects, called cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants, can light up many tests at once with little clinical meaning.

How to Read Your Results Together

No single positive result equals an allergy. The value comes from the pattern across extracts and their components. A few combinations do most of the interpretive work.

What to Do with Your Results

Start with the results that match a real reaction you have had. A component positive to a stable storage protein or lipid transfer protein, paired with a history of hives, swelling, or breathing trouble, is worth reviewing with a board-certified allergist, who may confirm with a supervised food challenge, the reference standard. Positives with no matching symptom usually need no action beyond awareness.

For suspected venom allergy, component results help identify which insect to treat rather than how severe a future sting will be. If you retest, do it when a question changes, not on a fixed calendar; sensitization patterns evolve over years, and a shifting profile alongside changing symptoms is the meaningful signal.

When Results Can Be Misleading

Sensitization is common in people with no symptoms at all. In one study of adolescents, 53.5% had at least one positive IgE result, yet many were symptom-free, and venom and weed-pollen positives were frequently silent. A positive test means your immune system recognizes a protein, not that you are allergic.

Two panel-wide confounders inflate the count. Shared plant-and-insect sugar tags can turn many food and pollen tests positive without clinical meaning, and a high total IgE background can nudge several borderline results upward. This panel also cannot diagnose non-IgE food intolerances such as lactose intolerance, which work through entirely different biology.
